The Country

The UK is an island State in Western Europe, developed on the entire island of Great Britain and on one sixth of the island of Ireland.

The United Kingdom is a unitary State consisting of four constituent Regions (Home Nations): England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The only nation which borders the United Kingdom is the Republic of Ireland. It is located off the west coast of Northern Europe, surrounded to the east by the North Sea, to the south by the English Channel and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean and by the Irish Sea. The Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are dependencies of the British Crown but they are not part of the United Kingdom.

The UK also owns fourteen overseas territories which are the remains of the British Empire:

  • Anguilla.
  • Bermuda.
  • British Antarctic Territory.
  • British Indian Ocean Territory.
  • Cayman Islands.
  • Falkland Islands (also known as the Falkland Islands or Islas Malvinas).
  • South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands.
  • Gilbratar.
  • Montserrat (Island).
  • Pitcairn Islands.
  • Island of St. Helena.
  • Turks e Caicos Islands
  • British Virgin Islands .
  • Military bases of Akrotiri and Dhekelia in Cyprus.

The currency of the United Kingdom is the British Pound. The Bank of England is, the Central Bank responsible for issuing its currency. The UK chose not to join the Euro.
More than 80% of the population is made up of English people, about 10% of Scottish people, the remaining 10% mainly of Welsh and Irish people. The United Kingdom is also home to many communities of immigrants in particular coming from former British colonies (the West Indies, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh) and from Africa.

In the UK people do not speak the same language. Although the most widely spoken one as a matter of fact is English, the European Charter of regional languages has officially recognized autochthonous regional languages such as Welsh, Scottish Gaelic, Irish Gaelic, Cornish, Scots and Ulster Scots.

In the UK religious freedom is largely guaranteed by the State, although the Anglican Church is considered the official cult. It is divided into two archdioceses (York and Canterbury) and forty-three dioceses. Thanks to the Moment Act of Union in 1707 in Scotland the official religion belongs to the Church of Scotland (Presbyterian one). This one and other Protestant groups account for 10% of the population. 9% of British people are Catholic. The numerous foreign communities are dominated by religions of Islamic origin (75%), Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, etc. The Jews are about 267 thousand and they epresents the largest community in Western Europe immediately after the French one.

The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy ruled by the House of Windsor and a parliamentary democracy. The Parliament is divided into two Houses: the House of Lords, which is non-elective and as a matter of fact without any power; the House of Commons who owns the legislative power. Both Houses of Parliament have representatives from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The two Houses meet during the event of "State Opening of Parliament."

There is a Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh, with broad powers at a local level and the Welsh Assembly in Cardiff which has more limited authority for issues affecting Wales, yet it can rule other areas. Queen Elizabeth II is the Head of State of 16 member Countries of the Commonwealth Nations: the realms of the Commonwealth (including Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Jamaica).
